Bird Strike Prevention Films

Generally people get concerned about bird deaths from human activities like oil spills or the spreading of pesticides.  What many people don’t realize is how much greater a threat to birds there is from collisions with windows. More dangerous to birds than any other perceived threat, mid-air collisions with windows kill more than 600 million birds each year in the US and Canada combined.  Worldwide bird strikes on windows are responsible for more than a billion deaths.

Why Bird Strike Prevention Films Matter

The danger windows pose to birds is already large and growing.  The world we live in is becoming more populated, requiring more buildings and thereby increasing the odds of mid-air collisions.  Highly reflective windows are lovely but lethal. While you may enjoy the high sheen, and crystal clear windows of today’s architecture this finish to our avian friends.  When a bird collides with a window, it is a messy, painful and just a horrible way to die. There is the environmental impact to consider as well, since, birdstrikes are resulting in the degradation of many species. There too to consider is the monetary costs.  Millions of dollars of damage are done to homes and businesses each year due to bird strikes.  So how do you protect the windows of your San Antonio home or commercial space and the lives of birds? The answer is as simple as  making your windows visible to birds. That’s right, the most affordable and effective way to stop birds from colliding with your windows is by having   bird strike prevention window film installed. When applied to the glass windows and doors of your San Antonio structure, these films make windows visible to our fine feathered friends.

How Bird Strike Prevention Film Works

The reason why birds fly into windows is because they perceive glass as open sky.  This is because glass reflects all that is around it–mimicking the look of the real world.  To deal with this, window film companies have started making what is called “fritted” film– a window film with a specific pattern on it.  This simple addition to windows makes them more visible to birds. Fritted films are basically window film with a recurring pattern of lines or dots on it for the purpose of making windows look like solid objects.  When the birds fly towards a window with fritted window film, they will see it as a wall rather than open sky. The results of these films is a massive reduction in mid-air window collisions. They save bird lives while significantly reducing repair costs to home and business owner. In fact, right here in San Antonio we have seen countless bird lives spared. As well as a reduction in cost associated with bird strike window repair.

Types Of Bird Strike Prevention Film

Fretted films come in a pattern that is typically horizontal lines, vertical lines, or dots.  However, custom patterns will work too. Should you decide to use a custom pattern, choose something that repeats continuously with horizontal lines.  However, make sure the dots or other objects are spaced no more than two inches apart horizontally and vertically no more than four inches. The density of the pattern matters because designs that are more spread out will attract birds to fly through the spaces. A common misconception is that using the decal of a large bird of prey will deter smaller birds and prevent window collisions. This is won’t work because most birds will just attempt to dodge the decal and hit the window anyway.  You don’t really have to worry about the look of fritted patterns either because you can barely see them. So, the aesthetics of your windows won’t change much. Furthermore, fritted bird strike prevention films also give you some to all the benefits of window tints and films.
